Birthday Boy

So I've been spending some of my "free time" planning Peter's 1st birthday party. I just got some supplies from the Dollar Store today and created some fun centerpieces. It's going to be colorful!! My question for my readers today is...Is it ok to break away from tradition and not have a birthday cake? Will I be sacrificing a lot by not having one? Look at the mess it can make! :) I've been leaning towards the idea of fruit salad instead...
