A Few Days in Maui | February 2026
February flew by, filled with lots of training new employees at the airport and four elementary sub jobs. It took me a bit to recover from my trip home from Ecuador...I've just felt extra tired most of this month!
Ezra has been ski instructing, taking four classes online, and getting his plane out whenever he can! Also, Happy Valentines Day!
I was so grateful to be able to escape to Maui for a few days, an island I've wanted to visit for awhile, with the famed "Road to Hana". The price of accommodations on this island in particular are pretty high, so when I found the Aloha Surf Hostel with bunks for $60/night and free tours each day, I wanted to check that out!
While the hostel is quite small, it had all the things I needed -- a nice hot shower, comfortable bunk bed, a great kitchen with fridge and stove, hang-out areas, and BONUS, tours to different places on the island every day. I was able to jump in a 15 passenger van and let someone else do the driving while I looked out the window! The Road to Hana is a very long drive, with hundreds of corners. I have now been to a lot of places around the world, so it didn't rank as high as it might have had a I visited earlier. It's pretty, but probably only a 5 or 6/10. If you like swimming in waterfalls, you can do that! But for the most part, it's a long drive with not a lot of places to pull over and do things (my impression might be wrong, or you might have a different experience entirely!).
Maui has some gorgeous beaches and coastline views! If you don't want to fork over the big bucks for a rental car, you CAN get around the island a bit by public bus, but it will take some time. There can be heavy traffic on the few highways available and the speed limits are low. So just get on "island time" and plan to relax on the bus for a while (it took three hours for me to get over to Kapalua and about 2.5 hours back). The Napili Bay and Kapalua Bay beaches are really nice though!
And so...back to real life which involves getting quotes to fix our backyard fence, enjoying more daylight and warmer temps and looking forward to spring!! I'll be working a lot this month too, but hopefully there will be at least one or two little adventures!
