{serve} love your {elderly} neighbor

One of my goals as a parent is to expose my children to need. To help them realize that life is better lived when we're thinking of others. To learn kindness and compassion. To care.

We visited an assisted living facility the other day and knocked on doors, saying hello and offering bright pink roses for Mother's Day. Many of the ladies had flowers already, but a few seemed very touched and appreciative of the gesture. They always wanted to know the boys' names, commented on Ezra's hair, then said something like "why are you doing this?" or "are you with a church group?" Then of course, the thank yous.

One lady accepted her rose while seated on the toilet {she said to come in!}.

One lady told us about her 60 year old sister who still has red hair. And then she told us about her elderly sister who still has red hair. And then she said, "I have a sister and she's 60 and her hair is still red!"

I think the boys learned a lot about what happens when people age. And that they might be really lonely. And need someone to talk to.

On our way out, Peter said, "I think I made them very happy."
"Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me." Matthew 25:40 The Message
How do you help your children learn to serve the "least of these"?
